What is the Society’s Legal Status?

The Western Nordic Ski Development Centre Society was incorporated under British Columbia’s Societies Act in March 2006.

What are the Society’s Goals?

The Society’s purpose is to provide coaching assistance to developing and high performance cross country skiers and their coaches.

The Society was the result of collaboration by parents located throughout BC whose common interest was to enhance the coaching capacity beyond that provided by ski clubs and Cross Country British Columbia. In doing so, the Society seeks to support and supplement the work done by clubs and CCBC.

The Society does not create a ski club, but provides a vehicle by which clubs and individual athletes can obtain coaching assistance. The Society intends to maintain a close and cooperative relationship with BC ski clubs, CCBC and Cross Country Canada.

What are the Society’s Activities?

The Society provides coaching assistance in several ways, including:

  • On-going coaching to clubs.
    For example, the Society provides a development/high performance coach to Hollyburn Jackrabbits on a half-time, year-round basis. The Society handles much of the employer/employee administration and other matters, thus reducing the red tape which may pose a challenge for clubs.
    In the case of the Society’s current coach (Petr Jakl), the Society arranged for a 2-year work permit, meaning that club who wish to use Petr Jakl’s services do not have to apply to Immigration Canada;
  • Short term camps and workshops for clubs.
    For example, the Society is working with two clubs in the Kootenays to provide dry-land camps;
  • Athlete-specific coaching.
    Through the Society, Petr Jakl currently provides individual coaching to members of CCBC’s team, development squad, provincial team and masters. Other parents and athletes have indicated interest in using such coaching, and the Society plans to make the necessary arrangements for new athletes in the near future.

    Because each athlete is different, the Society has decided to govern the coaching service with Athlete Protocols developed in consultation with the athlete, the athlete’s parents (if applicable), the Society and its coach.

The Society’s programs are discussed in the Society document “Society Programs”. The contacts listed below would be pleased to advise on how the Society can assist clubs and individual athletes.

Who Provides the Society’s Coaching?

The Society is pleased that it has hired Petr Jakl to provide coaching services. Petr has a wealth of developmental and high performance coaching experience. His resume is found in the Society document “Petr Jakl Resume”.

If further coaching requirements and funding materialize, the Society will consider how to continue its work with these new opportunities.

How is the Society Funded?

The Society is funded on a 'user-pay' basis. For example, fees for clubs and athletes who use Petr’s coaching services are based essentially on the time and expenses needed to provide the service in question. The Society is also seeking corporate sponsorships.

Who is involved in the Society?

The Society is a very new organization. To establish the Society, three parents of skiers became the founding directors. These founding directors are Mae Hooper (mother of Heather Mehain) and Karen Peters and Wally Braul (parents of Zoe Braul).

The directors are now in the process of broadening the board to include other parents and representatives of ski groups who are willing to contribute to the Society's goals.

What about Insurance and Liability?

The Society will not compromise any of its athletes with unreasonable risk. We apply a 'safety first' philosophy. Additionally, we apply a series of precautions to ensure that all activities are covered by insurance and waivers.
